Who We Are

Heather

Born and raised?

Racine, Wisconsin

How long have you been farming?

2012 was my first season. Since then, I have worked on three different farms before joining forces with Amy to start Fine Fettle Farm.

First generation farmer?

Yes

Why organic vegetable farming?

I started farming because I was upset with our country's food system and wanted to change it for the better. Science, physical labor, problem solving, feeding people - those are the reasons I've stuck with it.

When you aren't farming, what are you doing?

Riding my bike, going to My Morning Jacket concerts, learning about wine, pickling and canning

What are your favorite crops to grow?

Radicchio, Camelot shallots, tomatoes

Amy

Born and raised?

Galesville, Wisconsin

How long have you been farming?

My first year of full-time vegetable production was 2008 at the West Madison Agricultural Research Station.

First generation farmer?

One generation removed. My uncle is a farmer.

Why organic vegetable farming?

Farming is honest, challenging and extremely rewarding work. Watching tiny seeds turn into plump, juicy tomatoes, long and strong carrots, large, cheery leaves of Swiss Chard never ceases to amaze me and I can't imagine not being a part of it!

When you aren't farming, what are you doing?

Going for walks, practicing yoga, occasionally reading books, maintaining a slight dependence on coffee, doing my best to stay in touch with all the great friends and family I have near and far.

What are your favorite crops to grow?

Leeks, potatoes, chard
